Why do vineyards grow roses at the end of each row of vines?

I’ve often wondered why most of the vineyards I see in the Yarra Valley have a rose bush at the end of each row. My best guess was that it attracted the bees to fertilise the grape flowers, but Bern put an end to the controversy by asking someone at a wine tasting….

The answer is: If there are any afids about, the attack the roses first and provide warning before they get to the grape vines. Kind of like the Miner’s Canary.

never heard of Handspring?

I rang up AAPT today to get Global Roaming and GPRS turned on for my Mobile. They have a service where they SMS you the details of how to setup GPRS on your phone, if they have it in their database of most used phones, but the girl had never heard of a Handspring Treo 180g before. She wondered if “”Handspring Treo”” was 3 people doing flips down the road….
I guess I cant fault the logic…

Eating an apple with CRUNCH

You know that crunch you get when you bite into a nice crisp apple. Try it one day with headphones on!

I found this out because I ate an apple on the way home from work one day and I still had the earpiece from my portable hands free kit in my ear.

Very crunchy.

Streaming Media Costs

A 128kbps stream at 8 hours per day = 450Meg/day to listen to
the radio. 2.3Gig/week.” – Jase in an email.

At 6.9c/Mb* that works out to $31.05 per day or $621/month.

“”$10 would buy a little radio, and you’d never need to stream again, but
there would be no way to get your employer to pay for it…”” – Jase again in the same email.

I know at one of the schools I work at that students are not allowed walk/discmans but are allowed to listen to music through the computer. It’s not surprising that we have done approx 8Gb in downloads from take40.com in the last 10 or so weeks. I’m glad we get 30Gb free each month.

* Rate that government schools pay. Most commenrcial rates are more like 15c/Mb once you go over your cap.

Digital Fridge

Bern posted the previous article to some friends and family, and we got a reply wondering “”was this the modern-day equivalent of the artwork pegged up on the fridge!””

I guess it is!
Please don’t leave the door open………. 🙂

About me

This started out as being an introduction to myself for my new book. It was way too detailed though, so I thought I’d just post it here for posterity:

Computers are now basically a part of everyones life in the Western World, but even as recently as when I grew and went to school, people that used computers for purposes other than playing games were considered at the very least, a bit strange. I used my first personal computer (TRS-80) at the age of 8 (my brother bought it for Uni) and there were no games, unless you typed the programs in yourself longhand.

Using that computer I taught myself the basics of programming and started a love of computers that has never left me. I finished high school having completed few formal computer classes, and being taught basically nothing I didn’t already know.

I moved on to do a self-paced Diploma in Micro-Computer Technology which was a great course for an into to everything in the world of business computing and then shoot you out into the real world to find out what you need to know.

Too much time at the computer????

I happened to glance at a picture up on the wall in the staff room at one of my schools the other day, and my first thought was gee, that’s pixelated”. I looked back aagain a second later and realised my mistake…

It was a tapestry….

Dodgy Computer Companies.

We all know that the IT world is full of interesting characters, but this really brought it home to me. Bernie picked up this little scrap of paper when she stopped at the 7-11 on the way home from the obstetrician. I had to put it here for the world to see, but I decided to remove the numbers to protect the guilty and also so as not to send business to someone who chills me by thinking they might be a competitor.

Stan, If you need a Spell Checker, Proof Reader, Designer or a decent Printer, give me a call. I might even be able to fix your computer. 🙂

Cap Collection

I collect Caps. Some people collect cars, others collects cards or stickers. I like caps. I even wear them. Okay, so not everyone puts photos of their collections up as a Web Page, but I’m stranger than most people. I’ve even divided them into General and IT Specific ones.
