Backstage at Barnum

I spent several nights over the last two weeks helping out with Mt Lilydale’s production of the Musical Barnum. I was originally asked by Casey Welch, whom I knew from her lead role in the college play, Wednesday, to help out to support the Outdoor Ed teacher, Mr Peter Barnett, with the safety rope work on a couple of the scenes, but I soon turned into to a Jack of All trades, and assistant to the wonderful backstage props manager, Tash Ciampoli.

The performances went off fantastically, and just about everyone remembered their lines and made it on to the stage at the right time… As I was backstage for all of the performances, I’m anxiously waiting for the video to be edited so that I can see what everything looked like from out front, rather than sideways.

I’ve spent a bit of time since we finished wondering what it is I like about plays & musicals, especially as I have no singing talent whatsoever, but I think I’m starting to realise that we all have our own gifts and that I can be really useful using my talent for organisation, leadership and encouragement to help those that can really sing and act. I also get lots of recognition & appreciation for what I’m doing, which I’m not getting at work at the moment

Will Mithen, who did a great job playing the lead role of P.T. Barnum, was talking at the after party about a group called something like the Mt Lilydale Players, an ex-student theatrical group that he was either thinking of joining or starting to keep things going. There is a huge talent, especially in the current crop of Yr 12’s and the school is going to really miss them next year, but I’m sure it will be a wonderful opportunity for some new talent to blossom.

New HTML tag learnt. &lt::abbr&gt::

Today I found the html tag &lt::abbr title=Full Name”&gt::Abbreviation&lt::/abbr&gt:: which is used to expand on abbreviations. For example, I live in the state of VIC, which displays VIC, but when you hold the cursor over it in a html 4.01 compliant browser, it displays Victoria. In order to write this page, I also had to relearn howto display html using & lt:: and & gt:: to display < and >. All rather neat.

Is your brain firewalled?

In talking to Steve over lunch, we began to wonder if your brain is firewalled, and your conscious mind is the DMZ, the demilitirized zone that contains the information that your subconscious (the trusted zone) will let you have. The outside world is still the outside.

So what we really need is tools to puch holes in the firewall to get faster access to the things in our subconscius.

Taking the plunge

I’ve finally gone the whole hog and moved the front page of my web site over to Drumknott so that it really looks like I update my web page (which I do). The old page is now archived as about me.

Compromised System

It has been a long a frustrating couple of days.

On Monday afternoon a bit after 2pm, three emails turned up in my mail box with the ip address of this server as the subject. This made me instantly suspicious, so I ssh’d into the server and found it had been hacked. I downed it straight away to avoid further problems, but I already had problems enough. Someone using ManiaC r00tkit had got in and defaced the main web page among other things.

We ended up rebuilding the server Monday night, and got all the we pages back up, but there was a problem with email until Wednesday lunchtime. Much more work needs to be done on hardeneing the system. The new server is already more secure, and it will get better.

What weighs more???

I started on a thought process the other day of sending a document to someone when their email was too slow. My thoughts went to a carrier pigeon, and I began to wonder how much a floppy weighs, compared to a CD. I wondered for a couple of days, and then I eventually got them out and threw on the scales. And the results are………………

.

.

A floppy Disk weights about 16g without a label, and up to 20g with a label on it.

.

.

A bare CD-R Weighs 16g and about 20g with one of those paper covers on it.

The upshot of that is that they both weigh about the same, but the floppy is probably better protected, but the CD wins over all by having much greater capacity and generally greater resistance to damage.

At least now I know.

Birthday

It’s my birthday and I’ll Blog if I want to… Happy 29th Birthday to me. This is my Blog on my corner of the Web and I’ll be as self indulgent as I want to.I found out why Bernie wanted my Palm Pilot, she was making the cover for it that she had been going to make for months. It is very nice too, Dark Green Vinyl with leather stitching. She also organised a week off work for me and booked us into a place in Halls Gap. It should be a nice relaxing break, probably just what I need, lots of trees, stars, open fireplaces, my laptop… There was even some marshmallows to toast over the fire and nice bottle of Port to sit back and sip.Extra kudos to Bern & Jase & Mon who organised for me to lend Jase & Mon some money a few weeks ago, and it turns out that was for the place in Halls Gap, so Bern could get it through without me seeing it.Time to go.
