At 8:23pm on 04/01/03, Rebecca Anne Snell came into the world at Mitcham Private Hospital, weighing in at just a tiny 2040g (4lb 7oz). Both are doing really well, and Rebecca got APGAR scores of 7 and 9 (out of ten, one score at 1 minute and again at 10 minutes) which is fantastic for a baby born at only 36 weeks (4 weeks premature)

New Year’s Baby News
Happy New Year!!
If you are watching this site to keep track of the pregnancy, there have been a few happenings in the last week or so..
When Bern went in for her checkup on Christmas Eve her protien levels were up a bit, and, combined with her slightly high blood pressure and swollen hands and feet meant that she probably has pre-eclampsia. This means she has to rest a lot and I have to do all the work :(.
We are now seeing the doctor every couple of days, and it is fairly likely that things will be accelerated a little and the baby born well before it’s due date. Even from 36 weeks (this Saturday), there is a very good chance that the baby will be born strong and healthy, though it may need to spend a day or two in the nursery. More as it happens..
If you haven’t put your guess in yet, there is still time (but maybe not much..)
Greener Pastures
After 3 fun years at the RMIT IT Testlab, I’m resigning to spend my time a bit closer to home doing System Administration and Support for a couple of the local high scools as well as concentrating more of my time on GeekZone and especially Talkin’ Tech.
I’ve really enjoyed most of my time at the lab, but of late it has become clear that I need a change, and the opportunity to work close to home instead of on the other end of the wolrd (saving about 8Hrs & 450Km / week) is too great to pass up, especially with a baby on the way.
I’ve learnt (and hopefully taught) a lot in the last 3 years, and I will miss RMIT, but it is time for a change. I’ll still keep in touch, and RMIT people will probably still see me around the place.
Baby Guessing competition
I’ve finally put together the Baby Guessing competition that I’ve been meaning to do for ages. This allows you to guess what sex the baby will be and what date/weight the baby will be born, and it also creates a list of email addresses that I can use when the baby is born to notify everyone.
Note: Only one guess is allowed per person. I will only accept the first guess from each person. Entries close whenever we leave to go to hospital. There is no entry fee, but there may well be a prize.
Here is the link.
Dodgy Computer Companies.
We all know that the IT world is full of interesting characters, but this really brought it home to me. Bernie picked up this little scrap of paper when she stopped at the 7-11 on the way home from the obstetrician. I had to put it here for the world to see, but I decided to remove the numbers to protect the guilty and also so as not to send business to someone who chills me by thinking they might be a competitor.
Stan, If you need a Spell Checker, Proof Reader, Designer or a decent Printer, give me a call. I might even be able to fix your computer. 🙂
Kram’s Online Buying Guide
I frequently look for, find, and lose various online places to shop, so I thought I’d throw a list of them up here where I wont lose them.

Cap Collection
I collect Caps. Some people collect cars, others collects cards or stickers. I like caps. I even wear them. Okay, so not everyone puts photos of their collections up as a Web Page, but I’m stranger than most people. I’ve even divided them into General and IT Specific ones.
Baby Names v2 – Web based
Okay, so I should have done it this way first (thanks Jase), but at least now I can say that I’ve done some work in Perl.
Here is the web based version that anyone can use. I needs some more documentation, but at least it does what I wanted it to do.
Baby Name Shortlister
It also saves lots of cutting and pasting with text files on unix boxen. 🙂
Baby Names – Perl
No, We are not calling our Baby Perl!
Perl is the name of the programming language I used to write this script which took all the first names we were looking at, and all the second names, and made them into a real name, with initials. That way we can weed out all the name and initial combinations we don’t like.
I’m no great programmer, but I love a challenge. Here is the script I wrote, which works rather well, and even takes out duplicates. I’m sure it could be better, but I’ve never really written anything in perl before….(and it only took 20 minutes)
#!/usr/bin/perl
open(FIRST, first_name_list”) || die “”Could not open $filename…\n””::
@first_name=<::FIRST>::
foreach $fn (@first_name)
{
chop ($fn)::
open(SECOND, “”second_name_list””) || die “”Could not open $filename…\n””::
@second_name=<::SECOND>::
foreach $sn (@second_name)
{
$fi = substr($fn, 0, 1)::
$si = substr($sn, 0, 1)::
chop ($sn)::
if ($fn ne $sn)
{
print “”$fn $sn Snell $fi $si S\n””::
}
}
}

World Views
Today, the US have launched a Public Relations capaign aimed at showing the people of Muslim countries that America has happy Muslims living in it’s cities. This is despite the fact the people of these countries have been shown to dislike America for it (inward focused) attitude and foriegn policy. Hell, I even dislike America for that, and I’m not a Muslim..
Back home in Australia, I get frustrated by people (including myself) who don’t do something about a problem just because they think that one person can’t make a difference. Maybe they can’t on thier own, but we need some sort of a forum where all those one persons” can get together and really make a difference. Oh no, I’m starting to sound like I really should get in to politics…
